How to Pack Light for travel: A Reddit user posted on the Solo Travel subreddit, asking how women who pack minimally for travel do it.

She elaborated that she wanted to have just a carry-on luggage but still have a cute outfit, a nice pair of shoes, and makeup.

Packing light has helped me take budget flights like Ryanair, as they charge for suitcases.

Also, traveling minimally has helped me make some rush decisions, such as taking day trips from my destinations. For instance, when I visited Milan, I soon realized there was little for me to do there. I decided to take a day trip to Lake Como and return to catch my train from Milan. I would not have managed to go to Lake Como if I had a huge luggage.

Packing Light for Travel: Tips from Reddit Users

One comment said, “I do two weeks in a backpack with no issues. I bring two pairs of shoes, two pairs of dark pants, and shirts (several rayon blouses that won’t wrinkle but will look nice) for half the number of days (I wear them twice), a nice scarf, plus socks and underwear for each day +2. A nice blouse and a pair of dark slacks are appropriate just about anywhere; no need for a separate cute outfit. I only pack minimal makeup and jewelry (I often do a night of an elegant performance like a concert/ballet/play, so pearls plus a scarf are plenty to dress me up), so it fits in my toiletries bag. Everything matches everything; my goal is nice but comfortable, and I use layers like thermal leggings and thin sweaters under a coat to adjust for temperature rather than bring different outfits. For hot temperatures similar but focused on lightweight clothing appropriate to the area.

Another added, “Wear sneakers, pack heels. One pair of jeans can then be dressed up or down. Makeup is the bare minimum. I usually do carry-on bags for three days or less.

Another jumped into the thread with a new suggestion, “I went to the UK last summer with just a carry-on. I brought a couple of cute outfits and a couple of pairs of shoes. My secret: compression packing cubes. They fit SO MUCH STUFF. And then I did laundry a couple of times during the trip.”

Another said, “Tights/leggings and dresses. I even walked the Camino in leggings and loose sun-dresses. If going somewhere cold, a unique heat-tech top to go under. Silk or satin underwear. A scarf or earrings to dress up an outfit. Trainer pumps are comfy and often okay for restaurants. Buy cosmetics locally if you can. Solid shampoos and conditioners are good too. I take tinted moisturizer and an eyeliner, makeup-wise.”

And lastly, “For periods, I use a menstrual cup. Traveling carry-on only: pack my laptop, notebook w, some pens, toothbrush/paste, all-purpose cream and gentle soap, mascara + lipstick, and two pairs of socks/undies. For clothes, I wear layers and take them off as needed, usually not packing anything beyond what’s on me. You’ll be surprised how little you need. The freedom is worth it.”
